Over on Moonshake Books, my book review site, I’ve had a detailed look at Kakuzo Okakura’s magnificent the Book of Tea. In this, tea drinking is celebrated as the fine art it is, which I consider to be a timely reminder of its wonders during this coffee-obsessed era.

I’ve had a hectic 2017 as a Content Manager, which included launching two new websites during an extensive content migration project. This included mastering Tridion, which is the most unusual CMS I have ever come across. However, I’ve since made the shift decision to return to copywriting and my journey to this has been illuminating.

I’ve added two short stories to my satire site Professional Moron. I’d entered these into amateur literary competitions and they didn’t make any progress whatsoever. My satire website (Professional Moron) will be six years old in February 2018 and, by then, I’ll have written over 1,500 posts for it. After eight long months of intensive work, and numerous hundreds of hours of overtime, the launch of the UK and Irish websites has been completed. It was first content migration, but it was certainly hectic! Building a new website from the ground upwards in the unusual Tridion CMS has been one of the biggest challenges in my career.

Over the last six months, I’ve been covering Jean-Paul Sartre’s brilliant Roads to Freedom trilogy on my literature review site – Moonshake Books. This was wrapped up today with the posting of my 10,000 word review of trilogy closer Iron in the Soul. In total, the trilogy has produced 20,000 words from me, of which I’m rather proud.

Watching cult TV show Futurama back in the early 2000s, it lampooned the excessive use of advertisements online. Fast forward to 2017 and the issue is worse than ever – I’ve sat around in meetings listening to how companies will bombard consumers with PPC, YouTube, or other social media ads, but there’s a definite sense of overkill happening.

The longer I’ve been in business, the more frustrated I’ve become by business spiel. It’s perfectly possible to perform your job without resorting to industry jargon or anachronistic corporate speak – by subverting this you can, in fact, come across as an imaginative and creative person, which is essential if you’re working as a creative. Mindlessly reeling off the corporate way of things is a sure-fire way to produce rubbish content.
